Stanley
Another pub built in Stanley. On one side of the door below the eve is a scary Bust of Stanley and on the other side is a sculptor of a rooster with the words "Stanleys Motto. While I live, I'll crow". This was built in 1882 and in this area back in time, there was a mix of Irish and Walsh miners. It is told that they struggled to get on with one another, and hence there were many violent scuffles, these became known as "The war of the Roses".
Not far from here is a modern-day gold mine that is still being actively mined. It's the biggest hole in the ground that I have seen. Then there is what you can't see Three other holes and then there is the underground mining that is now 200metres below sea level. We were told that they work 7 days on and 7 days off, and when working they remain below ground for the 7 days.
