Taking up arms

An interesting talk at the local museum this afternoon about the notorious eighteenth-century smugglers, the Hawkhurst Gang. Fascinating to hear of the extent of their influence, and their brutal behaviour.
Particularly interesting for me because my seven times great-uncle was a member of the gang. He was caught and sentenced to death for murder, but somehow managed to prove his innocence and was released to live to a ripe old age.
