Apple tree

We have an old apple tree in our garden. I know it's been here a long time because a lady who lived in this house over 40 years ago remembers it fondly. Its gnarled, twisted trunk is now hollowed with age and little holes have appeared, which I think are home to a family of sparrows.

If you look closely, the shape of the trunk and the holes almost form a face - a quiet, watchful presence that feels like it's been part of the garden forever.
