Sidetracked again…..
…. on the way back up the Mountains. At the Ross Lookout at the opening of the Glenbrook Gorge looking out over Penrith towards the city.
The extra is from the National Park on the other side of the gorge looking North along the Nepean River. For those not into railway history, do not proceed past this point.
The railway behind the lady taking silly photographs is a section of the Glenbrook Gorge Deviation, built in 1910 to bypass the Lapstone Zigzag of 1865 and the inadequate Glenbrook tunnel of 1892. It’s still in use today and ranks as yet another engineering masterpiece. About 300m over my right shoulder is the site of the 1999 Glenbrook rail disaster caused by a signal failure followed by confused communication.
