'Connecting Old with New''

The Playfair Steps connect Edinburgh’s Old Town with the New Town. They are named after local early 19th-century architect William Henry Playfair. The 90-odd steps lead from Market Street down to the National Gallery of Scotland, also designed by him, and to Princes Street Gardens.

Originally known as the Mound Steps, they were officially renamed the Playfair Steps in 1978.
