Carquejeiras

This statue is erected in the Fontainhas neighbourhood, high above the Douro river 
in Porto. It commemorates the women who historically collected and transported carqueja (gorse), a plant used for fuel. Their work involved carrying heavy bales of carqueja up steep hills and through narrow streets to supply ovens and fireplaces.
The first Extra is at the mouth of the Douro river where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. We had a very pleasant tram ride there. Lots of things to see on the way including this Porto sign.
