Moraki Boulders
These Boulders appear on the beach as if they are large eggs laid by some mystical marine animal, but there is a logical answer for their existence. They were formed millions of years ago when the mudstone was calcified with the cement within the mud and was formed in circulating waters as this process continued the balls got larger and larger, with cracks then forming that were filled with calcite crystals. With the rise and fall of the sea and erosion of the cliffs behind the Boulders are dispersed on the sand and even today you can see more boulders being given birth from the clay.
