Looking through the sculpture

It’s our last day here and I was up early to have a quiet wander. It was beautiful. The sun was already up and the golden light lovely. I saw just one runner and a couple walking their dog. A quick browse in the small garden by the church with some lovely flowers and birdsong. I then returned back to our accommodation.

We packed our bags and vacated the premises and then went for a walk through town to Porthmeor beach. It was still early and we watched as a group of youngsters prepared for opening the surfing school and others took early walks on the beach.

As we had booked to visit the Barbara Hepworth museum and gardens for its first opening time we then headed back into town. There were only a few of us at first exploring the sculptures in the delightful gardens. We hadn’t expected such a visual treat and wondered why we hadn’t visited before. The gardens was full of plants and flowers. Birds were peaking out at various points and butterflies flitting around. Such a beautiful background to the amazing sculptures.

When we came out outside it was like a different place. We had been transported by the beauty and quiet to another world. Well it was a Saturday and very sunny so the noise and bustle of lots of people is to be expected.

We then went to a favourite place for a coffee and cake with a great view of the harbour.  Then we started the journey home. We stopped at Launceston for a late lunch and a wander. It’s an interesting place with a castle and a very unusual church for the entire exterior is built of carved granite blocks. St Mary Magdalene is a Grade 1 listed building built on the site of a medieval chapel in 1524.

It’s been a very enjoyable break.
