Your Home Away From Home Under Construction
I've got very behind with my blip journal yet again despite all previous promises to myself to remedy the situation so I have just decided to jump forward in my blip timeline and then once more fill in the yawning gap as I go along.
Today was originally intended to be a quiet day with it being spent mostly at the top of the garden catching up on some reading in the unseasonably warm almost summer like weather.
It had stared out that way but after an early morning run I got a call from my sister to say that she'd forgotten her laptop and that I would need to meet up with her at lunchtime over in Chatham to reunite her with her tech as she needed it for work.
Luckily my brother was happy to accompany me and after we'd facilitated the computer based reunion we decided to head over to the Dockside Shopping Centre, which was once part of Chatham's Naval Dockyard, for a stroll next to the waterside and the fact that we'd discovered on the interweb before we left that it just happened to have a licensed establishment, called the Ship & Trades, where we could procure some lager themed refreshment.
Once we parked the car we ambled towards the waterfront with its views across the adjacent marina and to St Mary's Island beyond. With the sun beating down and drinks secured we sat outside and you could almost trick yourself into believing that you were somewhere far more exotic like the French Riviera!
That impression does dissipate somewhat when you then come across the extensive housing development, fast food outlets and factory shops with quite of a lot construction still going on as you move away from the waterfront but we still enjoyed our short but sweet visit.
I hadn't quite been able to capture a waterfront scene that I wanted but just before we returned to the car my eye was caught by the scene you can see in my image and particularly the placement of all the arms in the shot. I particularly liked that the arm of the yellow attired figure in the gymnastic pose in the background appears to be touching the top of the head of a passer-by and that the two workmen both have one arm raised at the same time - and even Alex the robot managed to make an appearance on the far left hand side of my shot!
I have to say that I was utterly dismayed by Sir Kier Starmer's speech yesterday and that he seems to have deliberately chosen to stoop to what very much feels like far-right populism. There was a great article by Ian Dunt on the subject in the i newspaper describing how yesterday was such a depressing day with the Prime Minister making it clear that he would be just as bad on immigration as his predecessors and that he intends to follow the exact same approach as New Labour, the Coalition and the Brexiteers in echoing the language of the far right ("island of strangers") and introducing new policies to make immigrants' lives miserable.
The article goes on to rightly argue "that we are culturally and socially richer because of our diversity. We lead more interesting lives, more nourishing lives by virtue of multiculturalism. It is in the food we eat, the music we listen to, the television we make, the books we write. And also less romantically but as just as importantly - the businesses we run, the markets we target, the software we design.".
Of course there has to be controls on immigration but surely the debate should be defined by evidence and reason rather than myths, nationalism and using tropes to placate the far-right.
He doesn't even seem to have learnt any lessons from recent history either - how the Conservatives journey ever rightwards to chase the Farage vote has only led them towards quite possibly almost total political oblivion. He has now seriously damaged any moral stature he once had.
