The phrase "last minute" might have been invented for Ottawacker Jr.
Up around 7 – with no Mrs. Ottawacker to bully (as she is back in Sundridge until Monday), the cats turn their attention to me – and so, by 8, the kitchen was clear, the laundry done, coffee made, and the sweet dulcet snore of the boy was still ringing through the house. He eventually got out of bed at 8:30 – an unheard-of time for him to rise, normally he is out and about before any of us – declared himself fit and healthy for today’s matinal soccer practice, and then went back to bed with one of the cats and the latest Steven K. Smith book. There he stayed until I made him breakfast. Somehow, with more than two hours to prepare for the practice, he still managed to leave getting ready until two minutes before we were due to leave. Today’s crisis revolved around the absence of this shin pads and a question about why his kit hadn’t been washed. As I refuse to wash any clothes that are not placed in the laundry basket, the answer to this question was an easy one to provide.
Having located a clean kit of sorts and found his shin pads, his practice went well – it was a friendly scrimmage against the Tier 2 side – even if the result (a 1-1 draw) left a few people a little worried for the outcome of the regional league in which they will now participate. Good, I say. Home, shower, and then off he went to ride the buses, while I did some work on the photo albums.
While he was out, Mrs. Ottawacker called to rail against her siblings (I hear ya, sister) and I did some work on a photo album. When Ottawacker Jr. returned, I realised we had no rice – and so decided to order from New China, an idea with which Ottawacker Jr. completely concurred. I cooked up some pork dim sum, drove to get the chicken fried rice, and then Ottawacker Jr. and I settled down to watch The Wild Robot. Meh...
