So about that book.  In our book group we are reading Clear by Carys Davies. The story unfolds during the era of the infamous Scottish Clearances, a period in the 19th century that saw whole communities of the rural poor driven off the land in a relentless program of forced evictions. 
I learned something about Scotland today. It made me realize something about humans in general. It seems all of humanity (each country, every civilization) is guilty, at one time or another, of being cruel to the least among us. It is disappointing to be reminded of our inherently cruel nature. Of course I say that knowing full well the cruelest among them exist in our current administration. They are just getting started.
