CERCIDIUM “Desert Museum”
My friend & I spotted this flowering tree at the park, today. I was certain it is a Palo Verde Tree because of the ferny leaves & bright blue/green bark. However, I have never seen a variety with such a profusion of bright yellow flowers.
The mystery was solved when I look at the
tag of this newly planted tree. It is
a hybrid of several Palo Verde Trees,
developed at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which combines all the best traits.
I am very fond of Palo Verde Trees,
& this new variety is thornless, has these
larger yellow flowers. It thrives in hot, dry
inland climates, tolerates wind & even
below freezing temperature.
I am smitten.
