My life in a day?

By MartnA

Mum, aged 14

Eyes closed and moving; nothing changed there!

She wrote about her time at Grammar School:

"Five of us passed the 11+ - three boys and two girls. My parents were means tested. My father received a letter saying "We are delighted to offer your daughter a place for which you will pay the full fees". This, I thought, belittled my efforts, as in those days anyone could go to Grammar School (if they could read and write) or their parents were willing to pay.

My grandfather offered me a bike if I could ride it. I had never been on a full sized bike before and wasn't sure how to stop it, so I rode uphill till I could ride no further.

I enjoyed Grammar School at first, but I did not like my last few years
there and I left a year after school cert. - on condition that I went to night
school."

Extra, whole school
