A place of contrasts - in more ways than one!
This is an evening shot taken in Stormont Estate showing the peace monument remembering Berlin, Coverntry and Hiroshima, with Parliament Buildings in the background, a building I worked in. A short distance away is my extra image which would make you think it could be anywhere in the world but Stormont, hence my title.
Both images were taken from Spender's Path, named after Sir Wilfred Spender, an Englishman who served as the secretary to the first Northern Ireland cabinet. His lunchtime walk took him along this path hence it became known as "Spender's Path".
In the First World War he led the 36th Ulster Division at the Battle of the Somme, his famous quote of that experience was:
"I am not an Ulsterman but yesterday, the 1st. July, as I followed their amazing attack, I felt that I would rather be an Ulsterman than anything else in the world." (Cpt Wilfred Spender, 2 July 1916)
