Tired after yesterday's surfeit of fun, I didn't put in much effort today, and more or less pottered the day away. Because it was rather dark and cold I wasn't expecting much insect activity either, so I was surprised when we had two Large Red Damselfly emergences from the free-standing patio pond. This gives a running total of six successful Large Red eclosures from seven attempts, which is very pleasing, given the awful state this container was in just a month ago.

I can't stop myself from fantasising that both the damselfly and his exuvia are giving me a cheeky grin here, as if to tell me that they're enjoying being part of this success story, and maybe even to suggest that I should have had a bit more faith in their survival skills. If damselflies could wink, I think this little guy might be doing just that.
