Copper Falls State Park

Gogebic Taconite has proposed building what would be the largest open pit iron ore mine in the world near Mellon Wisconsin. One report indicated the mine would be as large as 4 miles long, 1/2 mile wide, and 1000 feet deep.

Today I drove to Mellon Wi to see the area. Copper Falls State Park is just outside of town. It's hard to imagine such a large mine in an area of such natural beauty. I choose this picture of the falls as my photo of the day.

No doubt the iron ore mine would create many new jobs in this economically depressed area, but at what price to the environment?
