River Dee at Kirkcudbright
Today's the day .................... to mend bridges
This is the view today from Kirkcudbright Harbour, looking upstream on the River Dee. That bridge you can see is the main one in the town and takes the A755 road across the river and on westwards into Galloway.
The bridge was closed to traffic - apart from pedestrians and cyclists - very suddenly without any warning, a few weeks ago. It has caused enormous inconvenience to everyone in the vicinity - not least to those who live on the westward side of the bridge, a stone's throw from the centre of town but who have to make a huge detour to go to the supermarket or do anything that needs a car. We've suffered too because although we don't live near that bridge, all the diverted traffic has been sent on a big loop out our way to the next bridge across the River Dee. It's all very annoying specially because there didn't seem to be any solution to the problem. The bridge needed major work done to it to make it safe for all traffic - and the Council coffers were empty.
However, we did have some good news on Friday that a temporary solution was going to be put in place. The bridge will re-open to one-way traffic (with traffic lights) as from 2nd July, albeit with a weight restriction in place. Not quite sure how they're going to manage this?! - but, at least it's a start ........................!
