It seemed poignant on the 80th anniversary of VE Day to remember the 1527 service personnel killed mainly at the Battle of Crete in 1941 when we visited the huge Commonwealth Graves cemetery at Souda Bay.  I had not realised that the island of Crete was of major strategic importance in the Mediterranean especially in WW2.  Today Souda is very important as the large deep sheltered bay is a naval base for the Eastern Mediterranean and one of only three places in the world where the largest US aircraft carriers can dock.
Then we drove to nearby Chania which has a very attractive 14th-century Venetian harbour with crystal clear water, narrow streets and waterfront restaurants.
