Heartbeat Law

For the past three months, a pregnant woman in Georgia who is brain dead has been kept alive because of Georgia’s so called heartbeat law.

That law came into effect after Roe v Wade was overturned during tRump’s first term, by the US Supreme(ly conservative) Court, giving each US state the right to decide how they want to handle abortions. Predictably enough, the conservative and religious states of the south have been implementing all sorts of laws preventing their citizenry from seeking abortions.

The case above is an example of such a law: as soon as a heartbeat is detected, no abortion is allowed under any circumstances, including when the mother of the fetus is actually DEAD! And even in spite of the dead woman’s parents and husband begging for life support to be terminated. And even in spite of the fact that such a procedure has never been done for such an extended period of time (she is 21 weeks pregnant now and was pronounced brain dead at 12 weeks) and likely will result in a severely compromised baby who likely will require intense care for a long time. And guess what: there won’t be any financial or other support because it only matters that a baby is born and not that a baby lives a good life outside the womb.
