At Sea With A Brocken Spectre
We sailed into a fog bank today. I noticed my shadow in the fog and could just about make out a rainbow. Never experience a Brocken sphere before and this is probably as close to one that I'll ever get.
A Brocken spectre is a large, shadowy silhouette of an observer cast onto a cloud or mist, often accompanied by a rainbow-like halo. This optical illusion occurs when an observer stands above the upper surface of a cloud or mist, with the sun positioned behind them. The observer's shadow is projected onto the cloud or mist, and the sunlight reflected back creates a colourful halo.
