Cornwall day 5: Carn Euny holy well
And of course there were holy wells! This mysterious grove is at Carn Euny, also famous for the remains of an Iron Age village and a massive fogou - an underground chamber. The well is very secretive and en route we met a tiny dog who we were delighted to find out was called Demelza! Cornish wells have a distinctly pagan feel, and are usually bestrewn with rags or clouties as they're called here. The extra is of some offering st Madron Well, and the walk to St Levan's Well which was right on a cliff edge. The drive here was spectacular and nerve-wracking but we managed to park and then wandered along part of the the South West coastal route to the well - a little underwhelming but the view from it was mighty. Ignoring the don't even think about going down the cliff sign , we scrambled down to the sea- where several other people were also basking and enjoying the ozone. We picnicked here.
