I forced myself to get into town today. I had M and S gift card to spend. Before I looked I asked a member of staff if they were accepting them. She said she didn't think so. I then asked a staff member on the tills, and she had to ask someone. They said yes. I wandered and found a t-shirt. Got to the till, handed the card over and he said oh sorry we can't take them just now. I explained that the member of staff he was standing next to, said they were. Lo and behold it worked. Obviously there's not much communication between them. 
Wandered through the gardens on the way home.
