Allakariallak of the Arctic doesn’t have same ring

Having gone to bed at 10:30 last night, very early for me, I slept all the way through to 9:00, only waking as I heard the dulcet departure of Ottawacker Jr.’s door slam as he left for school. I was still cold. Despite 11 hours’ sleep, wrapped up in a duvet, there was no denying that I wasn’t warm. A hot shower helped, but I spent the rest of the day wandering around the house dressed like Nanook of the North. Nanook never had to live in Ottawa in May, though, so I wonder what he would have made of it all. (Actually, to check the spelling of Nanook, I did a Google search and found out his name was actually Allakariallak, and the film on which his story was based was staged. Oh well, another myth gone.)

Canada Post is going back on strike. The postal workers have been treated really shabbily by management – imposing mandatory schedule changes (to make them work weekends) and not counting sorting as part of their hours. The organisation has been cut to the bone over the past decades – and I definitely blame Stephen Harper’s Tory cabal for this – so, while the strike is a massive pain in the arse, what else can they do?

Ottawacker Jr. had a dentist’s visit in the afternoon, during which we discovered he will definitely need braces. I might have to start selling organ parts soon. The evening, like the day, was quiet.
