Rare bird - Red-necked Phalarope

Normally I wouldn't blip a photo taken so far away ( and cropped heavily at that), but this was an important sighting, so I will just have to go with the minimalist look. :-)

These red listed birds are rare breeders in Scotland, and there is no way I would have tried or have been able to get any closer to them. (The area is fenced off). We saw three birds in all and had good views through the scope. I've read that the whole of the Scottish breeding population consists of just a couple of dozen pairs.

Red-necked Phalaropes are tiny little birds around 18 cm (7.1 in) in length. They return in spring from wintering quarters at sea. Males incubate the eggs and raise the chicks. Females are more brightly coloured.
