This is a Stumpery

A stumpery is basically an arrangement of stumps and logs with ferns and other shade loving plants dotted through it.

They first appeared in gardens in the 1850's and have recently come back into fashion. The Victorian gardener would have used a stumpery to display an impressive fern collection .... they are now valued as a wildlife friendly habitat.

In time mosses, lichen, and fungi will colonise the stumps, whilst below ground the rotting wood will provide food and shelter for a variety of invertebrates.

This stumpery beside the small pond in Queens Park is made up of wood from a nearby fallen tree which came down during Storm Babet.

It's been a funny old day with regards to the weather. Torrential rain during the night with just a couple of short showers during the day. Very windy with periods of sunshine and some very ominous looking clouds in certain areas.
