A day of animals
My neighbour P asked me to call in on her animals mid morning. She had to be out all day. The professional dog walker was coming in the afternoon, but this was for a wee and a play for about 20 minutes. I have to be in a strong stance as I open the door as both dogs will knock me flying if I don’t. Whereas the cats - one is sleeping, the other sliding around and ignoring me, though she follows me into the garden. Here they are - the retriever, Saffy is essentially gentle, but so big. She wags her tail the whole time I’m there. The spaniel, Ella is so full of energy she never stops moving for a second, you could generate electricity from her endless bouncing. The cats are just cool - they have to be, living with those big dogs. At one point I realised the dogs had taken an empty flower pot into the house - empty, that is, except for a huge snail which I’d noticed earlier. They were playing Its mine! No, it’s mine! in the living room. Eventually I found the snail, unharmed, under the sofa, and settled it back outside.
Later I was sitting in the kitchen on a video call to my friends in Orkney, when I heard a strange sound. I looked down and there by my feet was Portia, with a live rat she had brought in. She no longer has her canine teeth, so she can catch them and carry them, but not despatch them very eas ily:-( I was out of the kitchen with the door shut behind me as quick as a flash. So it was a bit of a day for animals bringing in other animals which don’t belong in a house….
About half an hour later I went back in the kitchen, and I could tell from Portia’s behaviour that the rat was under the fridge. I thought the best thing was to remove ourselves, leave the back door open, and hope it would find its way out. At one point I saw it running around the kitchen floor, but I had no idea where it went. Portia was in quite an agitated state - the extra is of me telling her that I’d rather she hadn’t got us into this fix. And she is replying - ‘yes, I know!’
At bedtime I shut her in the kitchen - I didn’t want her coming anywhere near the rest of the house. In the morning there was a dead rat on the floor and a rather smug cat. I’m sorry if this is an upsetting story… I couldn’t find any way to rescue it
