Don't eat them raw...

Some elderberry flowers. While you can eat them cooked, uncooked flowers or fruit from the elderberry is quite poisons and will make you ill and can kill in extreme cases. It's a fast growing shrub and there are quite a few around the hippodrome - the dog isn't interested in them but he does sniff under them in case there are rabbits or other interesting animals to chase.

Three years ago we made black grape and elderberry jelly which was very good and you can taste the elderberries even when it was mostly grape. When we used to live in England we had friends who made elderflower cordial most years - which I was also partial too.
