Damp Utrecht
Travelling to Utrecht today. The 11.45 train out of Antwerp was rammed, so standing room only with the cases. It was a 30min journey to Roosendaal where we changed for the train to Utrecht, again a very busy train, but we got seats and thought we were lucky.
Unexpectedly the train stopped at Tilburg and we were all asked to disembark. There had been a collision further up the track.
We hung around the station for half an hour or so, but Information at Tilburg station was sketchy, so we just put the bags in lockers and headed to the nearest restaurant to wait. The NS rail app was the best source of live information.
We sat for about and hour and an half and then the app suggested that there would be a direct train to Utrecht at 15.33.
By the time we made it back to the station, the 15.33 was cancelled. The next option was a 15.46 to ‘s-Hertogenbosch then a change for Utrecht.
When we got to ‘s-Hertogenbosch it was like the end of days. The disruption and cancellations of the day meant there were hundreds on the platform waiting to go to Amsterdam, some trying to get to Schipol airport and a lot of Saturday night revellers. It was like a refugee migration.
When the first train came in it was pretty chaotic, people getting knocked over in the crush. We didn’t try to board. The same situation ten minutes later for the next train. We managed to get on the third train and arrived in Utrecht about 6pm in the pouring rain.
The hotel was very nice and we got a great room. When we headed out for the evening a random stranger gave us a restaurant tip. We scoped it out and it was a really nice place and we had a fantastic night. So it all turned out well in the end.
