Oak Apple Day
It is 350 years ago to the day since the town of Northampton burned to the ground. Local people raised as much money as they could towards rebuilding, and eventually King Charles the first helped out by donating building materials and waiving some taxes.
On the right is All Saints Church where the statue of the king is crowned with a wreath of oak leaves each year, requiring the current mayor to climb from a high roof up into the plinth of the statue to place the wreath on the king's head. The town centre was full of various robed dignitaries, military bands and battle enactment groups; the kind of thing the BRitish do well.
