Discovering
Mum and I had an appointment with the solicitor this morning. The firm of Dawson & Hart has its premises in a 17th century building which once housed Uckfield’s Grammar School. While in the waiting room, we noticed a curtained box on top of an old safe, and being curious, I lifted the curtain to reveal….Piltdown Man!
Or rather, a replica of Piltdown Man’s skull. The original is in the British Museum and the replica was presented to the firm in 1969 by the museum. It was Charles Dawson, the solicitor and amateur archaeologist, who claimed to have found the “missing link” between humans and apes. The skull was only found to be a forgery over 30 years after Dawson’s death.
The afternoon was spent going through some of the mounds of paperwork which Dad had kept. As well as lots of stuff for the shredder, I also discovered some lovely old photos and other memorabilia which Mum and I enjoyed looking at.
Our DVD tonight was “Goodnight Mr Tom”
