Still life in a Dynacare Lab
Obviously, having spent a full day yesterday being productive, something had to give. I got up, drove Ottawacker Jr. to school in the pouring rain (see, I do have a heart), and then continued on downtown to see if my optician could put a new screw in my glasses frame as the lens keeps on popping out. It would all have gone smoothly had I not got lost. That’s right, you heard it, I got lost. I might have lived in Ottawa for the best part of 25 years – but the Bermuda triangle behind the University of Ottawa still sends me the wrong way down one-way streets. Every. Single. Time. In the end, I had to pull over on Wilbrod Street, charge up my ageing cell phone, and look at Google Maps. Having finally located the optician’s, I am pleased to say that the lovely woman at the desk solved my problem within five minutes.
At midday I had to go to Dynacare for a blood draw. Having been somewhat perturbed by the outbreaks of measles in the city (get vaccinated, people), I called my doctor to see if I could either get a booster or some sort of space suit, which would protect me from the loons. He was a little shocked that I couldn’t remember whether I had been vaccinated or not – my mum was a nurse, so I am pretty sure that I was, but it was a loooooooooong time ago – and even more shocked when I said I thought I had had measles but, erm wasn’t sure. I remember having chicken pox. I remember having mumps. I remember having glandular fever. I remember various other ailments – dengue, sleeping sickness, rabies, etc. – but I have no recollection about measles. “Let’s find out, shall we,” he said. And then he sent me for a blood test, which apparently can tell whether or not I have immunity to the thing.
Does everyone else remember what vaccines they have had? I remember vividly the BCG and the line-up outside the school office. That hurt like buggery (allegedly). I remember trying not to cry while simultaneously remembering to scream loudly so the next person in the line-up, waiting impatiently outside the door, would know what was about to happen to them. I know, I know. I’m not proud. Well, just a little. But I can't remember any of the others...
And that’s all I got…
