Former Stock Exchange building.
Nelson Mandela Place in Glasgow was renamed from St George's Place in 1986 to honor Nelson Mandela, who was then imprisoned in South Africa. The South African consulate was located on the fifth floor of the Stock Exchange building, which faced the square. After the renaming, the consulate used a post office box number instead of the official address. The square was renamed as a gesture of solidarity with Mandela and his fight against apartheid.
