Eagle Crag - Todmorden

Viewed from Burnley Road in Cornholme,
Eagle Crag is steeped in legend - the main one being about a beautiful heiress called Lady Sybil who, at the end of the 16th Century, lived at Bernshaw Tower which was close by. She was extremely gifted and took a delight in the beauty of nature.
She longed for supernatural powers and bartered her soul for the gift of witchcraft which enabled her to take any form that she chose, usually that of a beautiful white doe.
An ardent admirer was rejected by Lady Sybil so he looked for advice from Mother Helston, a famous witch, who advised him to hunt in the gorge of Cliviger and search for a white doe. This he did and finally caught it near Eagle Crag and, fastening a leash to its neck he took it home to Hapton Tower where it turned back into Lady Sybil.
She renounced witchcraft and married her suitor Lord William - but they didn't live happily ever after because she soon returned to her former ways :-(
A mid 19th Century engraving can be seen here.
