Alexander Morton Monument
Alexander Morton and Company textile manufacturer was founded in 1875 in Darvel Ayrshire where over 600 were employed. Later there were branches in Carlisle and Donegal.
Morton employed the top designers of the day producing unique and much sought after fabrics.
Today the V & A hold over 700 Morton fabrics and Musée d’ Orsay in Paris display one of his fabrics on a seat manufactured for Liberty of London.
The memorial on the A71 between Darvel and Newmilns was erected in 1927. A category A listed building it incorporates panels depicting images of the textile industry and thoughtful script.
The monument is badly in need of refurbishment.
