Romans

We rejoined English Heritage today and visited Richborough Roman Fort and Walmer Castle and Gardens, both near where we're staying. Walmer was a bit too 'National Trust precious country house' for our liking. Richborough was much more interesting. It is where the Romans first landed in AD43 and established a beach head; grew into a bustling, then decaying Roman British town; and would eventually be the last place abandoned by the Romans in 410. The remains include a mansio or civic building and bath-house which some modern day children were greatly enjoying playing in, pretending it was a drive-thru McDonalds. It added to the authenticity of the site greatly.

We failed to persuade the boy to don a Roman legionary's costume, or even to wave a little wooden short-sword.

Roman sites are impossible to take interesting photographs of. This was my best effort.
