Pandanus Grove, Riverside Park

Our walking group today revisited Rocks Riverside Park, on the Brisbane River in the suburb of Seventeen Mile Rocks. The area was given that name in 1823 by the English explorer John Oxley - who calculated that a rocky reef was exactly 17 miles upstream from the river mouth. For most of the 20th century a cement factory was located on the riverbank. After it closed the area was converted into public parkland, with pieces of industrial machinery remaining as 'works of art'.
