The villain of the garden

We get a lot of magpies in the garden.  At this time of year, just as with the Jays that also frequent our garden, they are on the look-out for new fledglings.  I noticed that, when they did take one, all the smaller birds acted together and attempted to mob the villain.  They made a lot of noise and commotion but failed to save the youngster.
