Disaster??

I have inadvertantly pressed a key that appears to have deleted everything on my Desktop. I am currently trying to figure out how to retrieve it.  I've been at it for around an hour and in danger of possibly making things worse.
I have just poured myself a 'calming down' drink and I think I am going to switch this damned computer off and get a fresh start on the problem tomorrow ....... :-(  :-(
