A kestrel hunting over Ocker Hill, Randwick

My visit to Philip B, for coffee and catch up was a delight as always. We commiserated and laughed, and talked about John Marjoram's funeral which we both attended on Monday. Philip was in the procession I featured here yesterday.

After I left I wandered up the side of the valley and seeing an abundance of swifts, I stopped to enjoy the beauty of the Ruscombe valley, on the side of which Philip lives. A local woman stopped to chat as she made a circular walk around the valleys and mentioned that swifts were also swooping low over Ocker Hill on the other side of the ridge. I thought I'd go there and see if I could catch some in flight, which I did.

However the presence of skylarks distracted me, whilst their songs delighted my ears. Then this kestrel started hunting over the wild flowery meadows. As it came closer I managed to catch it hovering before its steep dive into the undergrowth. I don't think it caught anything this time.
