First lay your eggs, then build your nest?

A walk around the little reservoir at midday revealed an interesting aray of waterbirds. We were fascinated by two grebes whose floating nest looked hardly adequate to safely hold the three eggs, and the parent sitting on them. In the extra, both grebes were off the nest seemingly trying to improve its sustainability. The other extra is a mother duck with her five small, fluffy ducklings.
