reading:  Figures in a Landscape  by Barry England 
shortlisted for the first Booker Prize in 1969.
highly recommend it.

(two soldiers who have been captured by the enemy manage to escape  - i am so tempted to look at the ending, but will not!). it was made into a film  starring Robert Shaw and Malcolm McDowell).

i remember studying Conduct Unbecoming at school.
(also made into a rather good film, though it might seem a bit dated now).
