Our elderly cat is displaying increasingly worrying behaviour.

A couple of years ago, after her brother died and then more acutely after Jess our dog died, her personality changed - loudly meowing for food or attention (sometimes in the middle of the night), brazenly jumping onto the kitchen work surfaces and trying to eat food from our plates.   She follows us, and particularly Ben around the house and is very unsettled by change.  The big recent concern is that she has started leaving smelly 'deposits' on the living room rug before we come down in the morning.  (In all of her 18 years until now she has used a cat flap to go outside).

I went to the vet this afternoon for her annual jabs, and he explained that the meowing and apparent hunger may be attributable to cat hyperthyroidism (he's taken a blood sample), but there is not much we can do to stop the 'deposits' as she probably has some sort of dementia (which, by the way, can also cause attention seeking and disturbed sleep patterns).

We await the results, but I suspect her condition may not be treatable this time.
