Oystercatchers …….. WHAT ?!?
BFF Karen & I were at our favorite beach today (fab day btw) and we spotted two of these birds. We have NEVER seen them at the NJ Shore. So a quick Google search provided the answer. Sorry, since I could not get a picture, I ‘borrowed’ this from the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).
Fascinating birds !
FYI - Oystercatchers do not usually eat oysters but rather cockles & mussels. Here’s another bit of info from the BTO ……
Oystercatchers are hard to miss. They are large black and white wading birds, with long, orange-red bills and reddish-pink legs. When they are in flight, they have an obvious white wing-stripe, a black tail and a white rump that extends as a ‘V’ between the wings. You often hear them before you see them, thanks to their loud ‘peep-ing’ call.
