Learning curve
Since joining the local bat group, I've taken part in some bat walks and done a training course on interpreting bat calls. We've had a simple bat detector for years and enjoyed using it. Times have moved on and there's now much more sophisticated devices around. I've taken the plunge and ordered an echo bat detector. It's taken a week to arrive but turned up yesterday.
There was a stressful hour trying to get it to work with my phone. It plugs into the charging port but my phone couldn't recognise it. I had checked compatibility before ordering. We tried it in S's new phone and still no joy. While I went through some trouble shooting suggestions on my phone, S had a brain wave. Removing the phones from their cases and then plugging in the device worked first time. Whew!
We went out at dusk to see if we could detect any bats. Mixed results but I think we picked up a few calls from a pipistrelle. Tried again in the garden and realised that I'd stupidly had the device, which is essentially a microphone, pointing downwards!
I will need to look at the online training videos to get up to speed but I'm looking forward to the challenge.
Only one more day in the office before our holiday next week as Friday is my usual wfh day.
