Bread and Blankets

It’s been a wet day which has been a good thing for the plants and if you like snoozing under a blanket. It’s also meant I’ve done some baking.

I’d eaten some dark rye bread in Sweden which contained seeds and dried fruit and I wanted to try to recreate it. I’d not made rye bread before so was a little sceptical about my attempt which used a recipe containing baking power and bicarbonate of soda rather than yeast. To my surprise the loaf is edible rather than brick-like, and not too far off what I ate in Sweden. I’ll try a few other recipes too and see how they turn out and settle on the one I prefer. If you’ve any recommendations, do let me know.

Also I made a Welsh tea loaf (bara birth) which I tend to cut in half and put in the freezer until I want to eat it. I’ve also made a sour dough starter. I’ve not made one before but some of the rye bread recipes I have been looking at use it so I’m going to see if I can get one going. I like sour dough bread too so it would be nice to be able to make some at home.

It’s felt a rather strange slow day especially with the rain and feeling a bit lethargic but I think some days that is what is needed.

Hoping your day has had something good in it. All the best.
