With amazing iconography, especially in today’s climate.
A colleague suggested a visit to Liberty’s crown, and she was absolutely right, it was well worth it. In a city where I am taken aback by the cost of things, three boat rides, a trip around Liberty and also Ellis island and four hours of really interesting activities was only $26. I almost paid more than that for a sandwich and coffee at lunchtime.
So pleased I made the trip, I obviously knew about this being a gift from the French, however never knew the back story, that is was in protest of the politics of France, which wasn’t a republic at the time. Plus the symbology of it celebrating the French siding with the US in the war of independence.
The climb inside was amazing, a double spiral staircase (the up and down nested together) and the framework over which 2.5mm of copper is clad. Quite amazing and so nice to meet the park rangers whose job is to meet tired tourists at the crown level, having ascended some 180 steps!
Just brilliant. As was the museum of immigration, one wonders if current politicians need visit, to remember how nations are built.
Anyway, enough said. Going to put my feet up for the evening, after all of this and a 20k run through Brooklyn before breakfast. I’ve only scratched the surface of NYC, but I have covered some ground!
