Ground Floor Only

We went to visit Montacute House today, a really impressive house build hundreds of years ago, yet still in really good condition – except for the stairs.  The first and second floors were closed to visitors because the steps have become too worn over the years and they need to be refurbished.  However, they were build of local Ham stone (from Ham Hill, just to the north) and the stone currently being quarried there is of inadequate quality, it appears.

No matter: it was a delightful walk through the parkland.  And the avenue of trees, old and new, visible on either side, was very impressive – particularly the older sycamore (we think) which had grown to impressive size.

In the Extra, a view from the front of the house, along the drive from the gate.
