Hincaster
A short walk by the Hincaster tunnel on one of the stranded bits of Lancaster Canal. I was carefully resting my camera on the fence here and dropped my lens hood in the water. Very annoying. Vegetation very lush now and no chance of rescuing the lens hood..
There is no tow path here. Originally, when it opened in 1819, there was a wire along the roof of the canal and the men would pull themselves along with their hands and feet while someone else led the horses through a separate tunnel. See extra for a view of both tunnels if you are interested. The tunnel was last used in 1944 by which time I'm sure they had motors on the barges.
