Storm over Bressay

Another fabulous day, our last on Mainland Shetland. We move to the island of Yell tomorrow for our second week.Yesteday evening we drove a couple of miles down to the coast at Wester Quarff at 10.30pm to view the sunset. It wasn’t spectacular but good enough. It was still light at midnight!

Today’s destination was the island of Mousa to walk around the island and visit Mousa Broch. The sea crossing from Sandsayre was informative with the crew telling us lots about the ancient and modern history of the island and its adjacent coastline.

The island itself is an RSPB reserve and had a clearly marked self guided walk around the coastline taking in cliffs and beaches included a storm petrel site and bays where seals haul out. We heard storm petrel chicks and saw seals.

The broch, the best preserved in the world, was open for visitors to ascend to the top for panoramic views over 360 degrees. There was also a very good display at the small museum near the Sandsayre slipway.

Another dry day, while we were out, with fabulous shower cumuli drifting either side of the island which is why today’s blip is not of the broch and why it was relegated to the extras.

A very late lunch ensued, there was just time to visit the magnificent curved, sandy beach as Scousburgh (Spiggie) before turning homeward for our last night.
