Book or film?
The Salt Path has become one of those, ‘you must see this,’ movies. The film is on at our art cinema for most of this month. But I’ve just read the book, which causes a problem. Reading is so different from taking in a film. A movie feeds you information, not to mention dazzling scenery, and it also tells you what to think. It’s an entertainment, which after all, is the purpose of cinema.
The book is way deeper than that. You are listening to a voice, Raynor Winn’s sometimes caustic, sometimes matter of fact, frequently inspiring and often beautiful voice. I like her voice so much that I’ve bought the follow up book, which if anything, is even better. It will never be made into a film I suspect, but If anything it digs deeper into the thing we call life.
So will I go to see this movie? Maybe out of curiosity, but it is Ray’s writing, and her voice that I will ultimately retain in my mermory.
